Do you know that Barack Obama is a Muslim terrorist who was born in a foreign country and that his wife Michelle hates white people? If you're a paranoid crank who never developed critical thinking skills, you probably do. Particularly if you read right-wing websites! In an attempt to quash all the lies, the Obama campaign "has built what might best be described as a Web-based rumor clearinghouse" called Fight the Smears. It's a risky strategy; fighting rumors with truth often serves only to further publicize the rumors. And while political rumormongering is nothing new, we think it's incredibly demoralizing that, in this day and age, a sizable segment of the American public could somehow given any credence to what are obvious falsehoods. Particularly when there are so many real concerns about Obama, like his plans to take our guns away and force us to gay marry. Or so we read somewhere.
