< BACK TO Fresh Intelligence Cancer on the Lido Deck? Scientology Responds
SEA SICK? Freewinds (Photo: Wikipedia) Reports of cancer-causing particles aboard the 40-year-old Scientology cruise ship and floating fortress for the church's secret OT VIII training floated around yesterday after a report by a St. Martins newspaper that the ship was sealed by authorities on the island of Curacao. Perhaps most interesting was the old interview with the ship's architect Lawrence Woodcraft, originally aired by Xenu TV and reposted by the anti-Scientology Lisa McPherson Trust and others. Woodcraft recalls in a 2001 sworn statement discovering the blue asbestos in the walls of the cabin of the boat. If the report and Woodcraft's claims that he notified his bosses of the asbestos as far back as 1987, it would mean that the ship's operators have been potentially exposing people to the deadliest kind of asbestos for 21 years. But a spokesperson for Scientology tells Radar the ship has not been locked up and is undergoing a planned overhaul, which will be finished on schedule. The next cruise is scheduled for Thursday, May 8. "Inspections done on April 15, 2008 and April 28, 2008 again confirmed that the air quality is safe, in accordance with the standards set by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration and the U.S. Clean Air Act," church spokesman tells Radar via e-mail. The full e-mail is below. First, however, it needs saying that the church has issued misleading, though technically true statements about its actions in the past. When Radar last asked about the church hand-delivering legal threats to members of Scientology antagonists Anonymous, the spokeswoman below denied that lawyers were delivering legal threats. But someone representing the firms hired by the church was delivering DVDs and legal letters. This time, Radar e-mailed the spokeswoman as soon as we learned of the report of the Freewinds being locked up. Karin Pouw objected to the lack of time we gave her to respond and to the nature of the questions. She went on to say that Freewinds inspects its air quality but does not say government authorities performed these inspectors. We've asked for clarification and proof of the inspection results and will report on the response. Tyler Gray PREVIOUSLY Um, except for the fact that the Freewinds is not allowed in any US port because of its many failures and hazards and pollutants. "No expense has been spared" -- Thank you, Scientology, for letting the US taxpayers support your magnificent and luxurious extravaganzas. Speaking of which, WHY THE FUCK DOES A "CHURCH" OWN A LUXURY OCEAN LINER? Did you know that when Scientology members go on a Caribbean cruise on this Deathboat, the whole thing is a tax write-off? And do you remember that Tom Cruise birthday party video from a month or so back, where he boogies down on the Freewinds? That party was a tax write-off. Anyway, we'll see if the Scilon spokeswoman's prediction comes true. It won't. Check out http://www.operating-thetan.com, http://www.xenu.net, and http://www.youfoundthecard.com to learn the truth about Scientology. PS to any Scientologist commenters: ANOTHER "DOWNSTAT" THURSDAY for you! ha ha! Posted by: JaneyZ on May 1, 2008 12:05 PM Karen Pouw is a flat out liar. For anyone curious, call the company who has the ship in drydock and ask them yourself. Curacao Drydock Company, Inc. Dokweg 1, Koningsplein, P.O. Box 3012, Cura硯, Netherlands Antilles Karen I honestly hope you rot in hell for not helping the people who were exposed seek medical attention. Posted by: They Lied on May 1, 2008 12:09 PM "The true and accurate story is that the Freewinds is being restored to better than new condition and no expense has ever been spared in meeting the highest safety standards of any seagoing vessel." The factual truth, according to sources, is that the Freewinds is packed with deadly blue asbestos, and that boat isn't going anywhere any time soon. So just drop the lying, drop the spin, and eat that delicious justice. DM has been aware of the problem for a decade and chose to ignore it. Now you are trying to act like it didn't happen. Who are we to believe? A Scientologist, or dock officials? Since there is proof, through Mr. Woodcraft's affidavit, that blue asbestos was first detected on the ship in the early 80s, and that Scientology officials chose to demonstrate incredible negligence for the well being of passenger and crew by continuing to promote trips on it, I think that anybody who has ever set foot on that death ship has a valid and actionable complaint. Furthermore, local officials who've been feted on the Deathwinds now realize the depth of Scientology negligence. You have exposed them, as well as young sailors, to the deadliest form of asbestos known. And you just admitted to the latter. Maybe some of those "maritime safety" courses you're bragging about should have included Haz-Mat instruction. I'm betting the people working on that boat weren't provided with adequate safety equipment as required when dealing with dangerous substances. Cancel those floating congresses and events and kiss that sweet, sweet income goodbye, Karin. The only place that rustbucket's going is Davy Jones' Locker.
Posted by: xenubarb on May 1, 2008 12:18 PM "The Freewinds will be completing its refit on schedule." Oh, really? Karin -- you really suck at lying. Anonymous is going to make sure you get caught red-handed every time you do it. Here's proof she's lying again: Scientology's annual CCHR convention aboard the Freewinds was scheduled for May 8th to the 15th. See a copy of the invite here: http;//img293.imageshack.us/my.php?image=cchrmay08av3ga6.jpg Knowing that this FAILBOAT has asbestos on it and that it's going to be stuck in port for a long, long time... an enterprising member of Anonymous called the Freewind Ship Office to try to book themselves for the May 8th event. For your listening pleasure: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vgcLdJpbdRA No, Karin... the deathtrap is not sailing on time. Your own ship office confirms this. Odd, no mention of the asbestos though. Wonder why... Posted by: DavidMudkips on May 1, 2008 12:39 PM Advertisement According to Jenna Miscavige, Karin Poiw's press statements are "novels." OSHA has NEVER inspected to Freewinds, so it seems that Karin Poiw wish that the public would believe her claim that the Freewinds has met OSHA standards is just that, wishful thinking. And really, What the FUCK is a church doing with a Luxery Liner. Someone should call Sen Charles Grassley since he is looking into similar conduct on the part of some "prosperity conscious" christian denominations whose leaders also have a taste for living high on the hog. Posted by: suzette on May 1, 2008 12:43 PM This has gone from a ship of fools to a death trap for thousands. May a good part of this travesty rest on your shoulders Karin. Posted by: MomAnon on May 1, 2008 1:04 PM So, Karin, How many people have spent time on this floating carcinogenic timebomb? Posted by: lawbster on May 1, 2008 1:36 PM "The Freewinds regularly inspects the air quality on board and always meets or exceeds US standards." is an acceptable truth. "There is no asbestos on the Freewinds." is a lie. Karin chose to respond with the former statement rather than the latter, even though the latter (if taken as truth) would be far more placating and reassuring. "The Freewinds is currently undergoing a complete refit, including renovations of all cabins and accommodations facilities" is an acceptable truth. "The Freewinds has not been sealed by Curacao authorities" is a lie. Again, Karin chose to respond with the former statement rather than the latter, even though the latter (if taken as truth) would be far more placating and reassuring. Draw your own conclusions. Posted by: AnonAnon on May 1, 2008 1:38 PM "He and the Freewinds have received numerous commendations from port authorities and other ships for the help they extended to the islands in ports of call..." Karen, on behalf of Radar Online and interested parties everywhere, I invite you to share some of these high commendations your captain and his ship have received. We would really love to see some evidence of your claims. 'Cuz, you know what they say, docs or it didn't happen. Oh, and one more thing. What do the people of Bonaire have to say about the truckloads of human waste you've been dumping....I mean, sharing with them for the past few years? What do you have to say about this video, Karen: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_AJNukeykjc&mode=related&search= Posted by: Porthos on May 1, 2008 1:38 PM LIAR, LIAR Pants on Fire! Completed on schedule, Karin? Then why this? http://forums.enturbulation.org/15-breaking-news/scientology-spinning-freewinds-delay-11923/ Posted by: suzette on May 1, 2008 1:39 PM i'm a little confused... can't they just use their superpowers to walk on water? cant they fix the boat with their minds? cant they control small animals and have them remove the asbestos? Posted by: kdilkington on May 1, 2008 1:46 PM What will Li'l Davy do without his fake navy's only ship? What will he be Commodore of? Happy birthday Davy, hope you didn't breathe too much on your many cruises. Posted by: Artoo45 on May 1, 2008 2:57 PM I changed the link to the Lawrence Woodcraft interview to Xenu TV, which deserves the credit for the original material. Sorry about the confusion. Tgray Posted by: gray on May 1, 2008 3:02 PM Thank you very much for this article Tyler Gray and Radar Magazine for this article. It's frustrating isn't it?...trying to get information or even a direct response to a direct question from scientology? Hard to communicate with people who, IMHO, not only practice revisionist history but also revisionist reality. What kind of an organization has such patent disregard for the health of their membership? Give me strength!! Posted by: anonymousofcourse on May 1, 2008 3:09 PM Shame, SHAME on the cult of Scientology! I am a former member of the cult who got out while he still had enough money to spend on food to his name. However the health hazards that I have been exposed to during my years spent in the Sea Org are irreversible. Scientology will never be able to give that back to me even if they wanted to (which they won't) Damnit Scientology, keep your billion years of service, I just want the last years of my life back Posted by: bgodley on May 2, 2008 4:06 AM Haha oh wow, way to deliver, Radar! Asking the tough questions and pushing for verification :3 Finally, a reporter that doesn't afraid of anything. Posted by: Anoynymause on May 2, 2008 9:32 AM This is great work, Tyler. Thanks for pursuing this important developing story. Posted by: MaxChampion on May 5, 2008 11:14 AM |
