Granted, the mystique surrounding Skull & Bones has declined over time, now that prevailing social norms have forced the not-so-secret society to admit women, gays, and minorities, and not simply the preferred coterie of wealthy blue bloods. Barbara Bush, the smarter, less drunk of Bush's twins, actually declined her legacy tap. But still, congratulations are in order—none of you 15 ever have to worry about formally applying for job in media, finance, or government again! It also includes three Skull & Bones "alternates," who gain admission only if any of the chosen 15 decline to sink their bids.
One of them, Andrew Mangino, happens to be the editor of the Yale Daily News, a position formerly held by failed vice presidential candidate Joe Lieberman, New Yorker humorist Calvin Trillin, hard-nosed New York Times book critic Michiko Kakutani, and beloved dead conservative William F. Buckley. Chin up, Andrew! Even if you don't make the cut, there's hope for you yet.
