"Startling official statistics show that as a new economic recession stalks the United States, a record number of Americans will shortly be depending on food stamps just to feed themselves and their families," notes Britian's Independent. According to the Wall Street Journal, even the well-off are delaying retirement due to the tanking stock market and the decline in housing prices. "To document similar conditions, 'you'd have to go back to the era of the [Great] Depression,' says financial historian Richard Sylla of New York University's Stern School of Business." The Times reports that "the Social Security system is choking on paperwork and spending millions of dollars a year screening dubious applications for disability benefits," mainly because insurance companies don't like to pay out.
