< BACK TO Fresh Intelligence American Idol Cuts it to Eight
SMALL FRIED Ramiele We'll also cop to our incorrect statement that Jason Castro should have been in the bottom group—especially since White's performance of "Jolene" was so off the mark. In watching the show again on DVR (so?!), it is clear that Castro was not as bad as the judges said. But there was so much more to Wednesday nights' dismissal episode: The Idols opened with a surprisingly cheese-free version of Parton's most famous hit, "Nine to Five"—oh wait, Carly Smithson and Brooke White punched the air to finish and Malubay and Jason Cook closed with a butt-bump. So close. Sadly for Malubay, the song was reserved for this group song; had she done it alone, it may have saved her from elimination this week. The show then awkwardly visited former Idols "succeeding" in the country music genre. Season Five's Bucky Covington has released two singles to-date and seems to be doing fairly well for himself. Season Six's Phil Stacy is just about to release his first album, and Season Four's runner-up Bo Bice has had a rough two years. Not only did he have the misfortune of losing to now-superstar Carrie Underwood, but he is also just back on his feet after suffering severe heath problems following his run on the show. Ever heard of The Clark Brothers, winners of a show called The Next Great American Band? Me, neither. They sang a song or something as filler. Then, Dolly Parton! Surprisingly, the singer sounded a little weak doing her new song "Jesus and Gravity," and it didn't help that she wouldn't stop moving her arms about. Still, this is Dolly we're talking about. At the final three, White was quickly sent to safety, leaving Cook and Malubay to ponder what they pay each month in agent fees. Host Ryan Seacrest mercifully made it quick, and poor little Malubay sat crying hysterically for a minute or two as they played her reel. Next week is the second installment of "Idol Gives Back," a fundraising effort that provides money for children and young people living in poverty in both the U.S. and abroad. Last year, the effort was helped along by involvement of celebrities including Ellen DeGeneres, Celine Dion, Ben Stiller, Jack Black, Kelly Clarkson, Earth Wind and Fire and Josh Groban, to name several, and raised nearly $70 million. It was a tearjerker as well, so expect this year to be even worse. Prediction: I don't think any amount of fundraising merriment can help Kristy Lee Cook, now clearly the worst contestant left in the top eight. If all goes as it should, next week will be Cook's last. Radar's version of Idol Chatter is the smartest commentary on the web. Keep it coming!! Posted by: peggy1207 on April 3, 2008 1:55 PM Well done and I wholeheartedly agree with the writer. I thought Malubay should have been the first of the ten to go, but yes, Kristy should be next....then probably Jason. We'll see, but I also think David Cook should be the winner.
