Corporate overlords at Viacom may have killed Best Week Ever's Internet campaign to save under-watched but critically acclaimed NBC football soap Friday Night Lights, but another effort, Save Friday Night Lights, is faring better.

According to Variety, the site has pulled in nearly $20,000 in donations, the bulk of which is being used to send NBC honchos Ben Silverman and Jeff Zucker mini-footballs that will likely sit unopened in a mailroom before being thrown away. Some money is also being used to buy FNL DVDs for execs at other networks who might be interested in providing an alternate home for the show, though you'd think that anyone contemplating such a move has probably already, you know, seen the show.

Now, grassroots efforts to save TV shows by sending network higher-ups useless trinkets are admittedly lame, but they've worked before. That said, we can't say we the point of convincing someone that a small but loyal group of fans really want a show to go on when it's obvious that said small but loyal group of fans wasn't large enough in the first place.

In addition to buying and delivering the footballs, fans of the show have rasied more than $2,000 for The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis and the David Edwards Fund.

Barth A. Green, M.D. and NFL Hall of Fame linebacker Nick Buoniconti helped found The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis after Nick's son, Marc, sustained a spinal cord injury during a college football game. Since then, The Miami Project has become the world's largest, most comprehensive spinal cord injury research center.

David Edwards inspired the spinal injury storyline on Friday Night Lights. He recently died at the age of 20. The funds will help his family pay the massive medical bills racked up from Edwards' injury.

Creator Peter Berg was actually at Edwards' funeral.

Fun fact: He was Endeavor founder Ari Gold's college roomate. I don't know why I know that.

Wouldn't it make a lot more sense to barrage executives with proofs of purchase of products advertised during FNL? Or to just buy the season 1 dvd in droves? They're wasting money on little footballs when they could be doing the opposite of a boycott.
