BULLET POINTS Packouz? (Photo: MySpace)
In case you missed it, a stunning New York Times story details how the military has outsourced a $300 million arms contract, the linchpin in its support of the Afghani Army and police, to 22-year-old Miami Beach resident Efraim Diveroli and his wild-eyed licensed masseur business partner David M. Packouz, 25. Together, they've had quite a run hawking decaying bullets and bombs recovered from cold war-era scrap heaps. Now Packouz, or someone going a long way to assume his identity online, tells Radar he's distancing himself from his partner, trying to be a songwriter.

He's into poetry, new agey acoustic alchemy, and quality time with his daughter, according to what, by all appearances is Packouz's MySpace page. Not only is there a picture of Packouz that almost exactly matches the one in today's Times, but there's a link to what appears to be his music page, DavidPAQ: MicroCOSM, and a picture of what appears to be the same man—kinda Daughtry-esque—sitting with the daughter he so frequently dotes on in his lyrics. Asked via MySpace message to confirm whether he was the same David in the paper today, "DavidPAQ" replied that he couldn't comment on the case, saying it's an ongoing investigation (now soon to be congressional testimony, thanks to Henry Waxman, D-CA), but he did tell Radar this: "How it will affect me only time will tell. My goal has always been to make a living from my music. I should complete my album within a month or two. There will be a song on there about my former scumbag partner (called 'Hog in the Rat Race')—I'm in the process of recording it now. Hope you enjoy the music!"

Does banking a share of $200 million a year in arms sales free a guy up to chase his dreams? "Unfortunately not," the presumed Packouz says, "because Efraim Diveroli has a serious psychological illness called 'extreme greed.'"

Other MySpace gems from David include this description of himself:

I'm very special and unique... just like everyone else. I'm currently working in the import/export field and practicing professional massage therapy. My goals are to see as much of the world as possible, learn spanish, russian and chinese, to professionally record the songs i've written and, most of all, to appreciate all the good things in life and be as happy as possible :-)

And on a singer-songwriter ballad, "More Than Anything in the World," (the also kinda Daughtry-esque song is also on his personal page), he sings: Love, it's why we're alive/Love, it's how we survive ...

That and a pouch full of crusty discount bullets. You need?

UPDATE: The man claiming to be Packouz writes again to give his side of one anecdote in the Times story today: "That fight that the nytimes claimed I was in—the valet punched Efraim first, and he fought back. I was just trying to separate the two. I have a copy of the security camera video that shows the whole thing. The charges were dropped because the lying witness never showed up in court after seeing the video. That's how they got that horrendous photo of me—the police mug shot from that night."
