Barack Obama's Speech On Race

  • Barack Obama, under fire for his association with controversial pastor Jeremiah Wright is set to deliver a speech on race in America today. Drudge has the text. After a quick read, here's what stands out as one of the more compelling parts:

[T]his helps explain, perhaps, my relationship with Reverend Wright. As imperfect as he may be, he has been like family to me. He strengthened my faith, officiated my wedding, and baptized my children. Not once in my conversations with him have I heard him talk about any ethnic group in derogatory terms, or treat whites with whom he interacted with anything but courtesy and respect. He contains within him the contradictions - the good and the bad - of the community that he has served diligently for so many years.

I can no more disown him than I can disown the black community. I can no more disown him than I can my white grandmother - a woman who helped raise me, a woman who sacrificed again and again for me, a woman who loves me as much as she loves anything in this world, but a woman who once confessed her fear of black men who passed by her on the street, and who on more than one occasion has uttered racial or ethnic stereotypes that made me cringe.

These people are a part of me. And they are a part of America, this country that I love.

In the speech Obama quotes the Founders, William Faulker, and, of course, himself. There are flashes of the "arrogance" he's been accused of, but, all in all, it's a pretty impressive outing. Full text here.

  • Oh please...here we go hearing all about SLAVERY once again. However, I never thought we would hear it from a nominee for President. I am sooooo sick of hearing about slavery. I am 46 and have a mixed child and I respect everyone until they give me a reason not to. Listen: Obama knows how his pastor feels and continues to go and listen to him? I now know that Obama did sit in those pew and listen to the racial spewing (along with this children I might add) and I find that very offensive. There isn't a pastor in AMERICA that would say the things that his pastor did and ever have a congregation UNLESS that congregation is also racist. It's that simple. He can't disown him? So don't. However he's now to me more racist than I ever imagined.

I don't know how can you not expect "race" to surface in this election when two presidential candidates are minorities, one of them being of color. Race has been a problem and part of America's history for decades. You can choose to live in ignorance if you choose, but reality is a BITCH. When reality approaches you "DON"T RUN." -----I applaud Obama.
