Gunn: Sadly for Hil, the Clothes Make the Woman

POLITICAL THEORIST Tim Gunn (Photo: Hailey Eber)
Radar caught up with Project Runway's Tim Gunn Thursday night at the 20th annual Bailey House Auction and Party, and the conversation quickly turned to politics. After Gunn criticized Hillary Clinton's abysmal fashion sense last week on Conan, we asked if he cared to expand or offer specifics. "Let me put it this way," he said coyly, "I believe in the semiotics of fashion." We took it to mean he believes Hill's gear tells the full story of her—by some measures—foundering campaign.

The event, which raised money for those living with HIV and AIDS, was co-hosted by Gunn's fellow power gays Simon Doonan, Jonathan Adler, and designer John Bartlett. Radar flagged down ex-P-Runway-er Daniel Vosovic and his fashion friend Elizabeth Benator, who like many of the ladies in attendance wore Diane Von Furstenberg, and both were more forgiving of Hillary's fashion choices. "I don't think we should criticize Hillary," Vosovic said. "We should criticize her stylist."

Benator, though, applauded the black jacket with upturned collar Hillary wore in the Texas debates, and excitedly told Vosovic about a recent pashmina-over-fitted-jacket the lady candidate had scored. "Ooh!" Vosovic squealed, "what color!?" "Raspberry!" Benator cooed. Yet, despite Hillary's occasional fashion triumph, both said they had voted for Obama in the primary.

Later in the night, the live auction was an amusing exercise in Bravo synergy. Jonathan Adler said his favorite item auctioned off was a shopping spree with Tim Gunn, while Simon Doonan preferred the prize of a week at at Val Kilmer's place in New Mexico. Other notables pieces on the auction block included a cooking lesson with Top Chef hottie Sam Talbot (Doonan quipped about the pleasure one might derive from having Talbot attend to any "special" dietary needs), photography by Robert Mapplethorpe and Herb Ritts, and a lovely picture of some dude Madonna used to sleep with.

Comments

Alright ladies.. put the claws away. Has it really gotten to the point where when asked about a candidate our initial reaction is to critisize their fashion sense versus their political agendas?
