To recap, McNamee, who first outed Clemens in the Mitchell Report, is claiming that he injected the Rocket at least 16 times with steroids and human growth hormone between 1998 and 2001—a claim, of course, which Clemens denies. On Friday, McNamee also announced that he'd injected Clemens' wife, Debbie, with human growth hormone to help her get into shape for a spread in the 2003 Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue.
McNamee says he got the drugs from former Mets clubhouse attendant Kirk Radomski. Radomski has publicly declared that he believes McNamee over Clemens. He was sentenced to five years probation for distributing steroids last week.
At the heart of the hearing is a party thrown in June 1998 at the house of admitted 'roider and meathead extraordinaire Jose Canseco. McNamee claims that he saw Clemens and Canseco meet at the party to talk about the benefits of steroids, and that he was approached by Clemens a few days later after Clemens had decided he wanted to juice up. Clemens, on the other hand, is saying he wasn't even at the party, and that he has videotape evidence of TV announcers discussing said party in which they explicitly mention that he wasn't there. Clemens' lawyer, Rich Hardin, also has a sworn affidavit from Canseco which states that Clemens wasn't in attendance, as well as a greens fee receipt for the golf course Clemens was supposedly playing at while the party was going on.
Those who have seen the affidavit and Clemens' video evidence think it favors Clemens. McNamee, for his part, has released photos of used syringes and empty drug vials he claims are Clemens', though the fact that he'd evidently kept these things for seven years on the off chance that he'd one day find himself in hot water seems to raise a number of concerns about the quality of his character.
In any event, either McNamee or Clemens will have committed perjury when Wednesday's proceedings come to a close. After countless more subpoenas and indictments and hearings and hours upon hours more of testimony and cross-examination—all in the name of something most fans don't even care about anymore, if they ever did in the first place—we may just find out who!
