Ralph Nader Has Announced His ... OH MY GOD DID YOU SEE THE CUTE POLAR BEARS?!

Hold on to your ovaries, ladies. There's a new baby polar bear in town. Yes, first there was Knut, the orphaned baby polar bear that started Germany's modern, polar-bear-crazed-era when he was born and quickly orphaned in the Berlin Zoo in December of 2006. He's now struggling to live a quasi-normal adult polar bear life, hoping one day to be able to enjoy a satisfying physical relationship with a lady polar bear, but it looks unlikely. Then there was Flocke, born on December 11, 2007 to the Nuremberg Zoo. She was soon pulled away her mother after another mommy polar bear at the same zoo gobbled up some of its youngin's and her own mother started acting a bit funny. And now, Stuttgart's Wilhema zoo announces it has a new baby polar bear of its own!

Stuttgart's baby bear, Wilbaer, was born on December 10, but the zoo is only just sending out the birth announcement. And, Wilbaer's mom has been taking good care of her cub thus far, not providing for Knut and Flocke's media-ready "tragic-orphaned-polar-bear" plot line. Nuremberg zoo director Dieter Jauch says the zoo kept Wilbaer away from the media until now because "we are not out for the big money." But, the bear's name has already been trademarked.

Still, that's nothing compared to cash polar bears Knut and Flocke. Between January 2007 and February 2008, 23 trademark applications were filed related to "Knut." He's also got a movie deal, and he helped the Berlin Zoo to increase revenue by 30 percent, raking in almost four million additional dollars for the animal prison. Flocke, who was born just one day after Wilbaer and only given a name 7 weeks ago, has already had 14 trademark applications filed on her name. And, Flocke puzzles, games, and stuffed animals were released at the beginning of February, just in time for the Nuremberg Toy Fair.

That's right world. We may have war, famine, looming economic depression, Ralph Nader, and global warming, but we'll always have fluffy white adorable polar bear cubs—at least those born in captivity.

Comments

I think these pictures are going to start a new baby boom, and hipsters will start dressing their children up as polar bears and naming them "Knutella" and "Snuggles." But then Wilbaer will grow up and people will see him tearing an otter to shreds or something and all those poor kids will disown their parents.

TGIF!

Not bad. But, as anyone who's lived in Greenpoint or Williamsburg or the outer edges of Bushwick will attest, disowning your parents is one of the pillars of hipsterdom, polar bear name or not. Now where's this month's trust fund disbursement? I need coffee.
