Kirk Watson Responds to 'Stump the Chump' MSNBC Bit

Following an cringe-inducing appearance on MSNBC's primary election coverage with tow-headed Hardballer Chris Matthews, Texas Senator Kirk Watson has finally done his homework on his presidential choice, Barack Obama. Is it okay if he turns it in a little late?

"So ... That really happened," Watson begins in a statement on his website. For the uninitiated, he's referring to Matthews making Watson what prison inmates call his "bitch," a tool in Matthews point about Barack Obama supporters being driven not by specific policy positions but by warm fuzzy feelings for the skinny kid with the funny name. Matthews asked Watson, who had come on the show to support Obama for president, to name a single piece of legislation for which Obama was responsible. Watson explains that it's not that he didn't know of any—that would be asinine! He just had a brain fart.

"And my mind went blank," Watson writes on his website. "I expected to be asked about the primary that night, or the big one coming up in Texas on March 4, or just about anything else in the news. When the subject changed so emphatically, I reached for information that millions of my fellow Obama supporters could recite by heart, and I couldn't summon it."

Then he goes on to answer the questions with the specifics he says he just couldn't call to mind last night: Obama's fight for universal children's health care in Illinois, legislation requiring police interrogations and confessions to be videotaped, ethics reform, his bill to make the federal budget more transparent, etc. After jokingly referring to his TV appearance as "Stump the Chump," Watson goes on to conclude, "Senator Obama has a vision for this nation, and we would be fortunate to fulfill it.... But most of all, he has the record to prove that all of this is possible. It's something no one should forget ... even though I did ... on national television."

This guy is my new hero! And I'm not being sarcastic! Pay attention, people... This is how you handle bullies like Chris Matthews, the RNC, and the Clinton Smear Machine. Well done!

Chris Matthews made his point the first two times he asked Watson for a list of Obama accomplishments -- and Watson could not answer. On the third and fourth times Matthews asked the question to rub it in, to further humiliate Watson, to pile on, Matthews was only making an ass of himself.
