< BACK TO Fresh Intelligence Massive Gawker Turnover Continues Unabated[DISCLOSURE: This writer is a huge, huge fan of Ms. Shnayerson and, while at Gawker, urged that she be hired. He also is one of the few people who can call her "Mags" and live.]
I'm sad for Maggie, but at least now we have real data on how much Gawker editors get paid. 670,000 views/month at $7.50/1000 views is $60,000/year. Posted by: bugmenot on February 25, 2008 3:32 PM Maggie was and remains the shiz. Posted by: Hamilton on February 25, 2008 4:12 PM Afraid I don't your standing to define what is or isn't a "fine writer." The lot of yez are proof that Blockbuster isn't hiring. Posted by: pete on February 25, 2008 6:16 PM So hire her, already. Posted by: brilliantmistake on February 25, 2008 7:39 PM Advertisement wow - so a gawker "salary" is an advance that you have to earn back before you even start to earn bonuses based on page views ? they dont make english overlords as benevolently as they used to. or is that standard web practice ? Posted by: matthew on February 25, 2008 8:57 PM Hmmmm. It seems that poor Maggie's declining page views coincided exactly with the period that Denton took over the editorial reins at that increasingly dull site. Perhaps Denton should fire himself? Posted by: yoko on February 25, 2008 10:14 PM @bugmenot The payment structure works a little different than that, it's not like what they pay for tips, but more with a base that requires x amt of traffic on a monthly basis and then whatever you do above that is tabulated as your bonus per quarter... Posted by: moneycashhos on February 25, 2008 11:14 PM You guys think they get paid in U.S. dollars? Oh, that's funny. They're actually paid in Gawker scrip, which can be used only at the company store. Posted by: Simon Scowl on February 26, 2008 6:13 AM Disclosure: Maggie was a huge reason I was still reading Gawker and now there's just Ryan's gossip round-ups. Photo-captioning celebs and three Britney items a day are what Gawker is now under Denton as editor. He needs to take a step back and cut it with his Choire envy. Posted by: rebellitor on February 26, 2008 10:35 AM So I guess Gawker is now full-on tabloid. I've seriously curtailed my Gawker reading over the past few weeks and this really just nails it in the coffin. I hope Maggie knows she's destined for infinitely better.
