Massive Gawker Turnover Continues Unabated

  • The constant churn of employees at New York media website Gawker has claimed another victim: Maggie Shnayerson, hired in September of 2007 to fill the media reporter role vacated by Doree Shafrir, has been let go, making her approximately the 1,450th employee to have joined or left that site since November. Shnayerson has been released due to poor numbers: An e-mail from Gawker Media overlord Nick Denton put it this way: "I'm afraid your stories are not performing well enough on Gawker, and I don't see how you're going to turn that around. Last month, you got about 400,000 pageviews; this month you're at 160,000; even taking into account your break, that's still far from satisfactory. You should be doing some 670,000 views a month to justify your advance. You're a good writer, and your stories are fine; you just seem to wrestle with them for longer than we can afford. I don't think you're suited to the pace of Gawker." Shnayerson is, in fact, a fine writer, and would be a welcome addition to any news organization's staff. Denton was unavailable for comment.

    [DISCLOSURE: This writer is a huge, huge fan of Ms. Shnayerson and, while at Gawker, urged that she be hired. He also is one of the few people who can call her "Mags" and live.]

    I'm sad for Maggie, but at least now we have real data on how much Gawker editors get paid.

    670,000 views/month at $7.50/1000 views is $60,000/year.

    Afraid I don't your standing to define what is or isn't a "fine writer." The lot of yez are proof that Blockbuster isn't hiring.

    So hire her, already.

    wow - so a gawker "salary" is an advance that you have to earn back before you even start to earn bonuses based on page views ? they dont make english overlords as benevolently as they used to. or is that standard web practice ?

    Hmmmm. It seems that poor Maggie's declining page views coincided exactly with the period that Denton took over the editorial reins at that increasingly dull site. Perhaps Denton should fire himself?

    @bugmenot

    The payment structure works a little different than that, it's not like what they pay for tips, but more with a base that requires x amt of traffic on a monthly basis and then whatever you do above that is tabulated as your bonus per quarter...

    You guys think they get paid in U.S. dollars? Oh, that's funny. They're actually paid in Gawker scrip, which can be used only at the company store.

    Disclosure: Maggie was a huge reason I was still reading Gawker and now there's just Ryan's gossip round-ups. Photo-captioning celebs and three Britney items a day are what Gawker is now under Denton as editor. He needs to take a step back and cut it with his Choire envy.

    So I guess Gawker is now full-on tabloid. I've seriously curtailed my Gawker reading over the past few weeks and this really just nails it in the coffin. I hope Maggie knows she's destined for infinitely better.
