THE GIFT OF RE-GIVING Bush (Photo: Getty Images)
Just in time for Christmas '07, the State Department has released a helpful list of gifts President Bush received last year, just to make sure, you know, that if you were thinking of buying prez some Huszár riding boots monogrammed with a W, you can see that he already has a pair—courtesy of Hungarian Prime Minister Ferenc Gyuresány.
The report, out Tuesday, lists gifts valued at over $300, so there's no way of knowing if you send W. one of those nifty Blackwater tree ornaments, or even the Bush Jesus pillow, you'll be the first in doing so (probably not). Of course, most world leaders are high rollers, like the former Prime Minister of Japan, Junichiro Koizumi, who gave W. an electric-power-assisted bicycle (is that some kind of hint about global warming?) and a set of Elvis Presley CDs.
Iraq's Prime Minister, Nouri al-Maliki, and President, Jalal Talabani, made the ultimate faux pas, giving George the same darn thing, a "silver palm tree with hand-hammered trunk and finely cut leaves with three bunches of gold dates," though Talabani's came "damaged on arrival."
But the award for cheesiest gift that can't be exchanged for cash or credit definitely goes to Ilham Aliyev, president of Azerbaijan, who gave the Bush clan "a handwoven rug featuring George and Laura Bush, the presidential seal, the U.S. Capitol, New York skyline, the Statue of Liberty, the White House, and his own palace," and which we're guessing won't be appearing in Kennebunkport anytime soon.
Should've just gotten him a gift certificate to Sears, guys!
