< BACK TO Fresh Intelligence Vogue's New Year's Resolution: Thinspiration!![]() WINTER WAISTED Kate Hudson While typically the inaugural issue of any new year is thin on ads, Vogue is deliciously plumped up for '08, thanks to a staggering 28-page calendar insert from diet drug Alli on which you can chart your weight loss and read chipper tips on zapping fat. If that didn't hammer home the message, you can flip to page 90, where Alli has passive-aggressively placed yet another spread, this one encouraging you to drop even more pounds, presumably so you can fit into the tiny silver Rachel Roy dress in their "Working Girl" spread. But how does the rest of the edit stack up under this barrage of fat-fighting inspiration? There's the requisite fluff piece on Kate Hudson, whose body is described by the magazine as "sick," (and they mean this in a good way) even as writer Eve MacSweeney lauds Hudson'os ability to scarf down salami, lasagne, and steak frites without daring to approach a size 4. Plus, there are tips on how to "Recharge," per the "Beauty, Health, & Fitness" section of beginning on page 107: "It's the easiest diet in the world: Researches at the University of California, Berkeley, found that eating half as much as usual every other day seems to boost the mechanisms that break down fats and significantly shrink fat cells." Just a few pages later, though, bearing the weight of the diet onslaught in the rest of the mag is the most jarring piece of the month—the story of two athlete sisters, Hibi Pendleton, who used "diet pills, diuretics, and laxatives" before breaking free of an eating disorder, and her sister, Leslie, who eventually descended into fatal anorexia after being gang-raped in Puerto Rico while on a college varsity diving trip. Hey, look! Holiday dinner's ready! Advertisement |
