Bush Secret Shredding Soars

trend_graph.jpg
HELL BENT ON DESTRUCTION Shredding contracts during Bush/Cheney
Behold, the Bush Administration in chart form: Federal spending on paper shredding has increased more than 600 percent since George W. Bush took office. This chart, generated by usaspending.gov, the U.S. government's brand spanking new database of federal expenditures, shows spending on "contracts for paper shredding services" going back to 2000. Click here for the full, heartbreaking breakdown. In 2000, the feds spent $452,807 to make unpleasant truths go away; by 2006, the "Cheney Effect" had bumped that number up to $2.9 million. And by halfway through 2007, the feds almost matched that number, with $2.7 million and counting. Pretty much says it all.

Interesting how in the wrong hands, the truth can quickly become a lie...

However, the truth is a little different...

First of all, of the top 5 districts that contract out schredding services, four are controlled by democrats.

Top 5 Known Congressional Districts where Work is Performed
District of Columbia nonvoting (Eleanor Holmes Norton) $1,017,407
New York 14 (Carolyn B. Maloney) $442,500
Maryland 8 (Constance A. Morella / Chris Van Hollen) $409,088
Georgia 4 (Cynthia A. McKinney / Denise L. Majette / Cynthia A. McKinney) $273,500
Illinois 7 (Danny K. Davis) $169,188

The one not controlled by democrats is interestingly enough the home of the IRS's main computer center.

Internal Revenue Service $5,471,067
ARMY, Department of the (except Corps of Engineers Civil Program Financing) $1,282,354
NAVY, Department of the $1,062,492
U.S. Secret Service $702,114
VETERANS AFFAIRS, Department of $678,590

The Federal Government's total paper schredding budget?

Paper Shredding Services $13,079,687

As the IRS makes up over a third of the budget, it's fairly simple to explain the concentration of services in the D.C. area. However, that is not he whole story.

What I find interesting is that given the locations of where the money is being spent, and the breakdown in actual expendatures, the one place that can not be easily explained for having a huge paper schredding budget is the current home of Hillary Clinton.

5 minutes with Google could have shown the truth on this story.

If this was a conspiracy of Democrats the graph wouldn't have spiked until 2007. Where the buildings sit is less interesting than who is contracting them, for what (as if we'll know), and what candidates benefited. Given the K Street Project and the like, Republican pork is a safe bet.

Wow. What a shock! The majority of documents are shredded in the districts with the largest concentrations of government agencies! Lets see... DC, the capitol of the US... NY 14th includes part of New York City including the United Nations, Maryland's 8th is the suburbs of DC, home to many federal agencies. Illinois' 7th includes much of downtown Chicago, likely including several federal offices. I'm not familiar enough with Georgia to tell you what's in it's 8th district , but judging from it's location (parts of Dekalb, Rockdale, and Gwinnett counties, in the Atlanta metro area), it's a safe assumption that there are a fair number of federal agencies in the vicinity. (BTW, 5 minutes with Google could have given you all this information had you bothered to look)

Even if your theory that it was the Dems doing all of the shredding was true, what makes you think they'd haul everything back to their home district to do it? If I'm not mistaken, most of the actual work that any given congressperson does happens in DC, not in their home district. Seems like your theory is a bit weak after all.

And finally, one of the few things that the Bush administration doesn't try to keep secret is it's obsession with secrecy. Why are you trying to blame the Dems for something that even Cheney would probably admit? Could it be that you're a bit insecure?

So, are we all agreed that this is not a conspiracy?

LOL

Here's the thing, there is way more evidence in this article that the Dims are hiding something than the Republicans, which still means there is nothing here to persue.

What has happened is that privacy laws and the shift to electronic storage have increased the number of documents legally required to be destroyed dramatically.

Yet it's ok if people throw this BS story in the faces of the republicans, if I turn it around and show the evidence that the Dims are the ones responsible, then it make this a whole different game now, doesn't it?

Boy that's a real shocker Bush/Cheney shredding documents! Just like what Bush/Cheney has done to the Constitution and America for that matter, they just keep on shredding and shredding with no end is sight.

When will these psychopaths (if ever) be held accountable for all the crimes they have committed against humanity? It doesn't look like it's going to happen anytime soon.

seabear70 is completely wrong- this graph shows shredding by federal agencies, not by individual congresspeople. You don't need 5 minutes worth of googling, you need only follow the link and view the individual transactions. All the contracts are listed, and the clients are DHS, the Department of Treasury, etc. So the shredding is being done under the direction of Bush appointees, not by Democrats. Anybody surprised by this clearly isn't paying attention.

Interesting laurance...

You've actually managed to turn a failed conspiracy into a laughing stock by suggesting that the IRS, the DHS, etc's schredding papers is as a result of Bush, even after I managed to point out how stupid this article is.

Tell me something...

How big a warerhouse would be required to store the paperwork that is required by law to be destroyed containing confidential information if it was kept forever?

Seabear, Do you have a handlebar mustache, lots of leather vests, an especially wooly torso, and a pronounced fondness for cigars? Do you live in a coastal hamlet?

Just trying to parse things here...
