Revenge of the Nerds: MIT Sues Gehry

DECONSTRUCTIONIST ZONE Stata
After three years of watching its Stata Center leak, break, and grow mold, the pocket protector brigade at MIT finally grew a pair and slapped star-chitect Frank Gehry with a lawsuit for the shiny monstrosity. The 78-year-old, who was paid $15 million for the building, remains "immensely proud" of it.

The nerds in charge of the drip-catching buckets insist on the project's deficiencies, particularly some cranky reviewers on yelp.com. The site is lit up with slams ranging from "there's never anywhere to sit down that's comfortable" and "[it's] poorly designed for everyday use" to "almost certainly Gehry's career low."

This is not, of course, Gehry's first foray into architectural flubs. Perhaps his most high profile screw-up is the jagged eyesore-turned-human-frying reflector known as the Disney Concert Hall in L.A.

Early in his career, while still working the mall circuit, Gehry designed the ghastly Santa Monica Place, a grouping which is currently less than half occupied and was renovated 10 years after it was built. Plans to tear it down a few years ago fell through when community activists weren't pleased with the replacement. Could it have been worse than what was already there? No, just more expensive.

In 2002, Gehry nearly brought his shiny shtick to New York. Teaming up with the Guggenheim and America's Mayor, Gehry planned to build a "cloudlike" structure on the East River for the ritzy museum. Opponents attacked the plan for its potentially devastating effects on the river, traffic, and their sanity. Fortunately, the appalling mess was aborted before it had the chance to randomly fry unsuspecting pedestrians.

Still, none of this is likely to stop the vastly overrated Gehry from securing enormous contracts to build even bigger buildings. But at least we're not the only ones who think he sucks.
