< BACK TO Fresh Intelligence Prince Harry ... Dead?
Edwards has explained the logic behind his work, saying, "Prince Harry's spirit must have died the day they told him he couldn't serve [in Iraq]." His curious memorial depicts the fallen prince, lying in state, his ears severed (the image above is of a clay mold of the work—prior to unveiling the finished piece, the artist will remove the ears), with a desert vulture perched on his boot. The ears, Edwards says, will be bronzed separately and then sold on eBay. Edwards is also notable for that unforgettable sculpture of Britney Spears giving birth on a bearskin rug, and of the bronzed replica of Suri Cruise's poop. Then there was the incisive Paris Hilton autopsy sculpture. All in good fun, in a creepy celeb-obsessed kind of way. The Royal family, however, is unlikely to be amused as Edwards crosses over into the realm of political statement, particularly given the timing of the exhibit, which will hit just as the British press has been inundated with way too much information in the latest Diana death inquest. Might we suggest Edwards focus instead on memorializing the virginity of Vanessa Hudgens or somesuch?
It looks like he has ears to me. I am no art fanatic, but the art that I do pay attention to is something that brings me great joy. This does not. I find it tasteless. I guess that's why I'm not an art fanatic. Posted by: TJ on October 4, 2007 2:22 PM C'mon. Its not tasteless and its not supposed to be him "dead." Its actually cool. Its an effigie. These are quite common for royalty in England. Regardless of the artists intention it seems to be an effort to depict what an effigie might look like if something befell Harry in battle. See: http://www.bbc.co.uk/wales/mid/fun/ecards/pages/montgomery_effigies.shtml We don't have effigies we have guys on horses. http://glasssteelandstone.com/Images/US/DC/GeneralShermanMonument-002.jpg Posted by: Johnny R on October 4, 2007 3:46 PM This yank does not consider the art work tasteless, if Prince Harry consented to this I believe it clearly show his feelings and disappointment at not having been able to serve his country in Iraq, goot show Harry. Photos of the actual sculpture weren't available at post time. All the nude statues of Greek and Roman sculptures are very tasteful, this is a great piece, but is limited to ones interest; some may only be able to appreciate the piece as simply one person's art.
