Al Sharpton on the Return of Imus

Don Imus is back—and Rev. Al Sharpton is surprisingly okay with that.

Imus buddy Bo Dietl dropped heavy hints on a radio show over the weekend that the aging shock jock will be back at WFAN no later than September. That would mean a mere five months of wandering in the wilderness for the I-Man, who was fired in April by CBS Radio and MSNBC after calling female college basketball players "nappy-headed hos."

Sharpton, of course, played no small part in Imus's downfall, even inviting the man onto his radio show to apologize to viewers only to declare his apology inadequate. Yet the Rev. tells Radar he would not oppose Imus's return this fall.

"My position is that we never called for him to be permanently barred from being on the air," he says. "We'll see when he comes back, and if he comes back, what are the boundaries and what is the understanding. We'll be monitoring the situation, but we wanted him to pay for being a repeat abuser, and he paid. We never said we didn't want him to make a living."

As for the claim that Imus is seeking a black comedian to "take the sting out" of his racial humor, Sharpton says, "A sidekick is not cover. What he needs to give him cover is his own conscience and whether he'll live up to the apology he gave those Rutgers girls."

This is the only time I'll agree with idiot Al; Imus doesn't need a black sidekick for a cover; because he's not or never was a RACIST!!!
Yea Imus!! I miss him

For those of us who have followed John Donald Imus since his New York debut in 1971 on WNBC, this is indeed excellent news, if it's true.

Not that Al Sharpton's blessing is required, but it demonstrates in some small manner that even Al thinks this thing went way too far.

Don Imus is the complete opposite of a racist and he never deserved this humiliation.

He reinvented his radio format and his show became the morning repository for news makers, authors, religious leaders, country music super stars, presidential historians and politicians big and small.

He relentlessly fought for the underdog and the unfortunate. His radiothons for SIDS families, kids with cancer and his quest for medical help for those afflicted with autism are legend!

This is the legacy the good deeds and the genius of a good and decent man who, like many of us, had the misfortune of making a mistake. The punishment is far greater than the so-called crime.

While he was personally humiliated even though his apology to the Rutgers Womens basketball team was accepted, we, the listeners have been deprived of his wit, his genius, his caring and his overall goodness after being loyal, faithful listeners from the very beginning.

Should this be a fact and he does return to the radio (I don't care if he returns to MSNBC)it will be a

Have cooler heads finally prevailed? I hope so.

Let Imus get back to doing what he does best--raising our awareness and sponsoring fundraisers for children suffering with cancer, addressing the neglect of our returning soldiers and giving us a good laugh during the morning commute. Don knows what he said was wrong and his apology was sincere. Give the man his job back and let him right his own wrong. I am confident he will come out of this experience a better man. Bring back Imus!
