Writer: I Was Stalked by Scientologists

cooper_062007_FRESH.jpg
DOGGED BY DIANETICS Cooper
Scientology can seem more silly than scary, with its zany mythology, made-up lingo, and Tom Cruise. But it was no joke when the group's leaders set out to destroy investigative journalist Paulette Cooper's life.

In the new issue of Byline magazine, a publication of the New York Press Club , Cooper for the first time tells the full story of her 17-year battle against the followers of L. Ron Hubbard.

It began in 1968 when she wrote a story, "The Scandal of Scientology," for Queen, a British magazine. Despite receiving a death threat, Cooper decided to write a book on the topic. "I was naive and had no idea of the horrors that lay in store for me," she writes.

A series of lawsuits by the Church of Scientology convinced the publisher of Cooper's book to issue an apology and a recall, but the forces she had unleashed were not satisfied. First, Cooper discovered her phone was being tapped. Then, her cousin was assaulted by a man who, posing as a flower-deliveryman, gained entrance to her apartment and pulled a pistol on her. (The gun jammed.) When Cooper moved to a more secure building, someone sent 300 of her neighbors an anonymous letter claiming she was a prostitute and had molested a child.

It got worse.

Cooper was arrested and charged with mailing an anonymous bomb threat to a Scientology spokesman. In front of a grand jury, the prosecutor revealed that her fingerprints were on the letter. Certain she was going to prison for a crime she hadn't committed, Cooper contemplated suicide. Her fiancée left her. She hired a private investigator—none other than wiretapping suspect Anthony Pellicano—who proved useless. Her weight dwindled to 83 pounds.

Her luck finally turned after a Scottish professor who was writing a book on Scientology provided prosecutors with information about "fair game"—the Church doctrine that encourages Scientologists to attack their enemies by any means. Cooper also persuaded a neurologist to inject her with truth serum and interrogate her to prove she was telling the truth. The government dropped its case.

In 1977, an FBI raid on Scientology offices revealed the truth: Cooper was the target of something code-named "Operation Freakout," a scheme intended to land her in jail or in a mental ward. She concluded that a man who had stayed in her apartment prior to her arrest had been a Scientologist who had stolen paper with her fingerprints on it to forge the bomb threat.

"I sometimes get discouraged because Scientology gets so much assistance and publicist from people like Tom Cruise and John Travolta, she writes. "As for me, I often wish I had never even heard the word 'Scientology.' But given the same situation, I would still do it all over again. I would not have been capable of remaining quiet, because I learned too many scary things and talked to too many people who were being hurt."

What they did to her was sick. It was also normal for them and they still do it now. Google "scientology and fair game"
While James L. or Greg or Terry will be here soon to tell you its not going on and to list their many, many scientology links the facts are clear.
This cult follows the writings of hubbard to the letter even to this day. They don't care who they destory. Google Keith Henson and see his story also.
Then check out xenu.net and xenutv.com to see the very dark side of scientology.

Is there any way you can read the whole article? If you go to the Press Club website there is no link available. I would love to read the whole article.

longer version of this story

I wrote the article about what the Scientologists did to me,(the first critic of them), for other writers and somehow it was picked up by Radaronline. The New York Press Club doesn't put their stories on line, but below is my (secondary) e-mail address and the person who posted here that they wanted to read the whole story can write me and I'll e-mail it to them.

Thanks for speaking up, Paulette! :)

For the general reader:
Paulette Cooper is a real hero to many, myself included, so I really appreciate this article. She is a true survivor in many ways and her story about how Scientology stalked and harassed her is a must-read.

I am very glad to see her speak out fully about what the 'church of scientology' did to her and others in her life. You can read about that and Paulette at wiki

You can also read her book,The Scandal of Scientology, for free online.
Just visit her website for the link:

Paulette is a writer of other genres.
Her 'pet secrets' books are very popular. There is much on the internet about her, including scientology's attack on her. Here's a google search link for more information. http://tinyurl.com/2kvv4z

Thank you Paulette Cooper for writing the, "Scandal of Scientology." This book has inspired research and recognition of the facts - as they are no different now pertaining to this scandalous cult...You are to be honored for setting such a literary precedent. As many find it hard to fathom what personal terror a person could experience, your article brings to the present, all of the possible tactics that this subversive group uses to thwart exposure...In the days when hard copy preceeded the Internet, journalists were harassed and labeled "crazy" to explain what destructive tactics ensued for publishing books and information in the media. No longer can the countless acts of psychological terror be explained this way, as the Internet brings your historical contributions, and experience for others to reconcile. So many people, experiencing the same horrors to any degree are validated of the reality of their experiences....

THANK YOU PAULETTE COOPER

I am a former Scientology member. I was in charge of one of their organizations some years ago.

All criticism of Scientology is true for the most part.

The entire 'religion' is a fraud, and is based solely on making money at the expense of it's membership.

L. Ron Hubbard railed against psychiatry, yet he was having serious psychiatric problems himself, and was a drug addicted alcoholic abuser of his wife, no different than many other men.

He claimed to have been decorated for his service in the US Navy, but was actually reprimanded on several occasions, and was viewed by his superiors as incompetent.

Scientology places strict emphasis on convincing people they need help, even when they do not, and of course convincing the public
to PAY OUT THE ASS for that 'help'.

And yes, they will stop at nothing to silence critics.

It is only too bad that the org cannot be shut down, with it's upper echelon prosecuted and thrown in prison for many, many years.

IF you know someone who is contemplating getting involved with Scientology, do whatever is necessary to stop them before their bank account is drained dry.

If they already are a Scientologist, and certainly if they have already contributed their hard-earned cash to the org, it is already too late. It may be possible to convince them to leave, but it will be very difficult, espectially if that person's Scientologist 'handlers' get wind of the plan.

IF YOU VALUE YOUR SANITY AND YOUR LIFE, DO NOT HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH THESE CON ARTISTS!!!

Posted by: Xenu_Killer on June 26, 2007 7:59 AM

That silly twit is laughable! All she is doing is trying to victimize a new and growing religion to get some publicity for her book. She sounds like the Queen of PoorLittleMeLand.

Where is one ounce of proof? One photo? One knock by a cop on any Scientologist's door? One of her charges backed up by a court?

this column is typical of a journalist who would ask probing questions on any other topic presented to him/her, but when the topic is Scientology, the writer's brain goes into "YesMaam" mode, and no questions are asked, no challenges issued. Apparently "investigative journalism" stops after the first allegation toward Scientology. It's suddenly "accusative journalism."

If this particular column is any measure of hilarity, I can't wait to read Cooper's book.

Someday, Paulette Cooper is going to hurt somebody. Her symptoms are all there: professional victim, taking no responsibility for her own problems, not eating so as to appear "victimized," threatening others, making up wild and unsupported stories that make professionals she hires desert her cause, manufacturing "reasons" and excuses for every proof against her.

For the safety of others, and maybe herself, Paulette needs to be with others who love her and will care for her at all times.

Hey ArgoByteIt, Ms. Cooper is not plugging a new book. "The Scandal of Scientology" has been out since the 70's, and she's done few if any interviews since then because of the experience she went through. As far as her knowledge on the subject, I would wager she knows more about scientology than most scientologists. The stories of her harrassment by scientologists are well documented by scientology itself. The FBI found the files after they raided the church's offices in the late 70's. This was when Mary Sue (Hubbard's wife) and other top leaders in the "church" were sentenced to prison. I think you should do a little of your own research on your church before spouting your opinion. (if you would like to read her book, it's available for FREE on the internet)

ArgoByteIt, inv_advice is correct about the book, which available to read for free on the internet.
You can get to it directly from her web site www.paulettecooper.com by clicking 'The Scandal of Scientology' or go directly to the site that is hosting it: http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~dst/Library/Shelf/cooper/sos.html

You can also get it at the library. It is available for purchase for this at amazon.com for those who like to have a hardcopy.

She's a real heroine. Read the complete story she wrote last week.

What is really the Church of scientology.
A therapy ? A financial, moral and intellectual swindle ?

I did in Geneva scientology Organization the rundown of purification.

I took the amounts of niacine prescribed by the scientology.

That returned to me sick.

The program of purification presents health risks.

Because of this treatment I had ignitions of my throat (larynx and vocal cords) and

I could not continue to play my saxophone.

Because of the scientology which prohibited to me to take antibiotics (and imposed this therapy) I lost my health, lost my job.

To make the confidential courses of scientology the program of purification were imposed to me.

Moreover on OT6 the scientology forced to me to sign a contract with WISE for my entreprise.

I refused and I was expelled of the room of course.

I lost thus much time and obtained any résultat in scientology.

For more than 10 years I have requested an allowance (indemnisation) from the Church of scientology for this disastrous result.

Like allowance, recently, the scientology proposed to me the ridiculous sum of 13'000 euros and not all my money back , and moreover the condition to receive this thin allowance is that I do not criticize any more the scientology on the Net nor in the media.

This is the truth.
