< BACK TO Fresh Intelligence Mormons: Smoke 'Em If You Got 'Em
Only 72 percent of Americans would feel comfortable voting for a Mormon candidate, according to a recent Gallup poll, a decline from 75 percent in 1967. Over the last 40 years, in fact, Mormons are the only group of so-called "non-traditional" candidates who have seen their favorability tank (by contrast, 88 percent of those polled in 2007 said they could support a female nominee, as opposed to 57 percent in 1967; 94 percent of those polled in 2007 said they would support a black candidate, compared to 53 percent in 1967). What's more, the Washington Post reports that 79 percent of voters would feel comfortable with a candidate who smokes. So is America ready for a Mormon president? Only slightly less ready than they are to elect a nicotine-addicted candidate with a cancer-causing habit. "Only" 72 percent. "Down" from 75 percent. Those are some pretty scary numbers, RADAR. Maybe next you can fill us in how a Catholic can never be elected president. Oh, wait... Posted by: WasatchMan on June 15, 2007 2:14 PM How about a poll asking voters how they feel about Barack Obama's having grown up praying in a madrassa? Oh, that's right, he could be pulled over for drunk driving with two dead hookers in the drunk and the media would either bury it or spin it to show how positive and lovable and cute and cuddly he is. Posted by: Bugs Meany on June 16, 2007 7:56 AM Generally, despite the very clear biases of Radar's writers/editors, I have enjoyed the perspectives and insight of its articles. This post, however, may constitute the weakest analysis I have ever seen published. A reduction from 75% to 72% is "tanking"? The difference is within the margin of error! It's obvious that the image of women and blacks has taken a huge upward turn in the last 40 years. Yet, to combine that trend with an absurd portrayal of Mormon political popularity suggests only at a writer first creating his own conclusion (perhaps that a Mormon, specifically Romney - likely a political enemy - is relatively unelectable) and summoning or molding arguments to fit that conclusion. Embarrassingly shoddy work Radar. Posted by: tthumb on June 17, 2007 9:40 PM Advertisement |
