Is Knocked Up Ripped Off?

INSPIRATION? Apatow, Eckler's book (inset)

Not only was Canadian author (and blogger) Rebecca Eckler the one who was originally Knocked Up, filmmaker Judd Apatow has screwed her over, Eckler says in the latest issue of Canadian magazine Maclean’s.

The author says The 40 Year Old Virgin director ripped off her 2005 memoir, “Knocked Up: Confessions of a Hip Mother to Be.” Having read the screenplay, she contends that character and plot details are identical, as are the cover art on her novel and the cover on the screenplay. Eckler proclaims that she hates Apatow so much for his theft that he makes her want to just ... just ... crawl into the fetal position.” Her copyright infringement suit is set to go to trial March 11 of next year.

Neither Eckler’'s lawyer, Gary Gorham, nor Apatow’'s rep, Rob Mandell, returned calls for comment by post time.

a quick look at the Amazon description seems to conflict with the author's claim. She was engaged at the time to the father. It was a long distance relationsip. A drastically different scenario from the movie. Seth Rogan is Canadian, though, so maybe she can sue him for that. Although, if I were Canadian, I'd be suing my parents instead...no one should have to bear that burden.

As a Canadian blogger who has been covering this controversy all week, I must protest and direct you toward the definitive source on the subject which even includes a polemic defending Canadian Jewish Men.
