Team Imus: Who's In, Who's Out

don_imus_freshintel.jpg
I-MAN IN WINTER Schlock jock Don Imus

For years, politicians, pundits, and power players clamored to appear on Don Imus's radio program to hawk things—be it themselves or their latest books or TV shows—to his well-heeled audience of 3.5 million. Then came Nappy-headed Ho-gate. Just over a week after uttering those now-immortal words about the Rutgers women's basketball team, the grizzled shock jock has lost not only his show, but the support of many in his gilded stable of on-air buddies.

For two days prior to CBS's canceling of Imus in the Morning, Radar kept an up-to-the-minute record of who was planning to stick around and who was jumping ship, either out of genuine moral disgust or concern about tainting their own reps. On Wednesday, we broke the news when ABC became the first major news organization to declare that none of its employees would ever go on his program again—arguably a key moment in the host's fall from grace.

By yesterday afternoon, Newsweek editor and show regular Jon Meacham had flip-flopped and announced the same policy for himself and his staffers, including Imus staples Howard Fineman and Evan Thomas.

Who stood where when the I-man took his tumble?

Last update: 8:23 PM, 4/12/07

LOYALISTS

Rudy Guiliani, Republican presidential contender
Told USA Today that Imus "understands that he made a very, very big mistake," and said he would continue appearing as a guest on his show.

Bo Dietl, security consultant
"When you say, 'I'm sorry," and really mean it, you should be forgiven. I would definitely be back on."

Tom Friedman, New York Times columnist
"My answer is a simple one: yes, I would go on," he tells Radar.

John McCain, Republican presidential contender
"I'm a great believer in redemption," he said on ABC Politics Live.

James Carville, Democratic spinmeister
"[James] has been on [Imus's] program for many years. He has been a friend of his. He's going to give him another chance, will continue to go on his program," said CNN's Wolf Blitzer on the The Situation Room.

Bill Maher, host, HBO's Politically Incorrect
"I told him this morning, I said, 'Your punishment is you're going lose some black listeners. And that should be your punishment. But that's it.' You know, he's apologized over and over," he told Scarborough Country.

Craig Crawford, Congressional Quarterly
"His heartfelt apologies and the absence of any racist pattern in his past work justify considering another chance," he told the New York Times

Mike Huckabee, Republican presidential contender
"Yes, I'd go on the show again. He's continued to have me on his show when I said stupid things," he told CBN News.

Paul Begala, Democratic spinmeister
Begala told Broadcasting and Cable he would go back on Imus's show "tomorrow."

Tom Oliphant, retired Boston Globe columnist
"Solidarity forever!" he told Imus on-air.

Bob Schieffer, CBS News
"If it were anyone else, I wouldn't have anything to do with them. But I'm not going to sever a relationship with someone who has apologized for what he said. He's my friend," he told the Washington Post.

Evan Thomas, Newsweek **
"He should not have said what he said, obviously. I am going on the show, though," he told the New York Times.

Jon Meacham, Newsweek editor **
"He appears genuine about changing the tone of the show so that nothing like this happens again. And if he follows through, then we're open to going back on," he told the Washington Post.

Other Apparent Loyalists ...
Newsweek columnist Howard Fineman **
Sopranos actor Steve Schirripa
• Disgraced Boston Globe hack Mike Barnicle
• CNN-turned-CBS talking head Jeff Greenfield
• NBC Washington Bureau Chief Tim Russert
• Alleged billionaire Donald Trump
• Hamilton Jordan, former Carter chief of staff

** Flip-floppers

DEFECTORS

Ken Auletta, New Yorker media scribe
Tells Radar he won't be going back on the show. "But I also don't think the guy should be fired," he adds. "He's been doing this kind of stuff a long time. There's some element of sanctimony here."

Barack Obama, Democratic presidential contender
"There's nobody on my staff who would still be working for me if they made a comment like that about anybody of any ethnic group.... He didn't just cross the line, he fed into some of the worst stereotypes that my two young daughters are having to deal with today in America," he told ABC News.

Hillary Clinton, Democratic presidential contender
"I certainly don't ever intend to go on his show," she told USA Today.

Cal Ripkin, Jr., former shortstop
"In light of recent remarks made on the program, Cal will not appear on the show as part of his national book tour," says a spokesperson.

Whoopi Goldberg, actress and talk show host
"What Imus said pissed me off," she said. "But when you talk like he does it comes back to bite you in the butt. How do you explain that you're not a racist," she said to the New York Daily News.

Al Roker, NBC's Today Show
"He is a radio icon. That said, it is time for him to go," the usually jolly weatherman wrote on his Today Show blog.

Ana Marie Cox, Time columnist
"I won't be going on Imus anymore. Having said that, it's not like they'll be inviting me back," she blogs on Time.com.

Other Apparent Defectors ...
Jonathan Alter
Howard Fineman **
Evan Thomas **
Jon Meacham **
Michael Isikoff
Charlie Gibson
Cokie Roberts
George Stephanopoulous
Sam Donaldson

FENCE SITTERS

Frank Rich, New York Times columnist
"I may [return as a guest]," he told CBS Marketwatch. "I'm not
ruling it out. It depends how [Imus] comports himself and how the show
shakes out when he gets back."

Harold Ford, Jr., Democratic Leadership Council chair
"I am a big believer in redemption. Yet, no amount of philanthropy gives anyone the license to offend innocent people. So I'm going to follow the lead of those brilliant and gracious women of the Rutgers basketball team and wait and see how the next two weeks unfold," he says in an official DLC statement.

Clarence Page, syndicated columnist
"As far as being a guest again, I would entertain the possibility if he actually does what he's promising to do. But in 2000 I coaxed him into taking a pledge about not using inflammatory racial humor, so I have my own feelings about his sincerity," he tells Radar.

Mitt Romney, Republican presidential contender
"If he did go back on the show, he would be sure to tell Mr. Imus how awful those remarks were," his spokesman told USA Today.

Maureen Dowd, New York Times columnist
"Ms. Dowd just got back from a month-long leave and won't be fielding any questions about this," her assistant tells Radar.

John Kerry, Democratic nuisance
No definitive decision, but "I am encouraged by his apology, the planned changes to his show and that he asked for an opportunity to meet with the team and apologize in person," the Senator says in an official statement to Radar.

Dan Rather, HDNet helmer
"He has not made an announcement yet," a spokeperson tells Radar.

CBS News
A spokesperson tells Radar, "[The network] has no plan to take a stand on whether its employees will go on the program."

Chris Dodd, Connecticut Senator
"As the father of two young girls, I can imagine how hurtful these comments were to these young women and their parents. The comments were wrong and unacceptable," Dodd, who announced his candidacy on Imus's show, tells Radar.

NBC News
Now that MSNBC has torpedoed Imus's morning telecast, its parent network's participation may be in question. Asked if frequent Imus guests Brian Williams, David Gregory, Andrea Mitchell, and Chris Matthews will continue to appear on the show, an NBC spokesperson tells Radar, "The question is moot for now." (Russert, NBC's Washington Bureau Chief, remains a staunch loyalist, having appeared on the show last Friday.)

Still Undecided? ...
Charles Barkley, basketball star *
Charles Schumer, New York Senator *
Dennis Kucinich, Democratic presidential contender *
Joe Biden, Democratic presidential contender *

* Have not returned repeated calls from Radar

Howard Stern Basks in Imus's Shame

its amazing to me how when mel gibson had a comment about jews his fallout was tremendous his movie was pulled backing stopped lay people and actors alike totally were against him even though he apologized "over and over and over" tried to meet with jewish community leaders and take jewish course he was not forgiven so easily.
Imus has a long history of "black" shock jokes surely we are not the only ethnic group to poke fun at or hype on stereotypic views back we always seem to be the butt of his jokes to me that signals hidden prejudice. so i have a hard time trying to accept his apologizes when the same thing continues and the reaseon it continues is becausse politician, wealthy socialites and "big shots" say stupid things like if it were anyone else i would not accept it but he's my friend really if it is wrong for a stranger it is wrong for your friend it doesn't help our society that is multi-cultural and intolerant of each others differences to keep overlooking those who want to keep the ambers hot. i accept an i'm sorry from anyone who is not a repeat offender sometimes we can get caught up in a joke because it seems funny but there a consequences to everything in like and his firing is his consequence and when he gets hired by someone else- and he surely will- this will serve a a cork for his big mouth when he is thinking of a racial comment P.s. his comments about them looking like thugs was free speech, funny and harmless that was a universal comment( referring to the white, latin, and black team member) notice how we are not without a funny bone as a black culture no one was singled out but just as soon as you added the nappy-headed portion it became racist. hopefully imus will read these blogs and get a lesson in free-speech 101

It's nice to see Howard Stern confirm for all of us to see what a low life he is. Jump on a guy when he's down especially if he is a less successful competitor. That's true Howard

-remember--The criteria for his show is SHOCK.
I remember watching the riots on television in Harlem many years ago when Rudy Giuliani was mayor. I am still asking myself the question why Giuliani did not have Sharpton jailed when he incited the mob to murder the 'cops'. I am tired of only one viewpoint being acceptable. Even the ignorant KKK, Skinheads, & members of all dissident groups have the right to free speech. Of course, I have no idea why anyone would wish to listen to these aforementioned diatribes. The most important quote that applies here is: "I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it."---The Friends of Voltaire. THE POINT? The point I am making is thus: Everyone has the right to free speech. Lately that only seems true if you are any other race than Caucasian.
Unfortunately in today's America you may only exercise that right (free speech) within your own home, and then only in a whisper, if it doesn't meet Politically Correct viewpoints. So, Imus should be fired if he loses listeners causing a loss of revenue to the station, but not for statements made that are not the viewpoint of the stations'. Especially after he has apologized. The criteria for his show is SHOCK. He was the first "Shock Jock."

How long should I wait to see when the reverends apologize for the Duke fiasco?I have decided that I will now exercise my first admendment rights and tell the two money changers to go to hell and take that sorry sack of sh-t Al Roker with them I don't agree with what people say all the time even if i am a fan or friend.I will stand for the right for free speech. It amazes me why I need some intelligent reverend and full time crook to tell me whats best for me.If I want to watch Imus and find I disagree with the subject I can turn the dial.I think some civil rights crooks are becomming to sensitive. It is probably due to the fact that they may have never served in the armed forces.Perhaps the two reverends should travel to Iraq and Afghanistan and see how things are going.I know the real men would like to see the holy ones face off with their holy ones in a duel to the death over personal power.Barack Obama can go as well and show the troops how to live in a hole for months on end .One who wants to serve as president of the US should be combat qualified! We don't need any "SKY PILOTS"leading the troops in battle.Did Sam Donaldson,Charlie Gibson, and Al Roker ever serve?I respect all the defectors rights, however they will never be seen on my boob tube.Ana Marie Cox-Cokie Roberts-George Stephanopulus and Ken Auletta,Whoopi Goldberg too.

Its a sad world we live in. I agree with the freedom of speech an anybody can say what they want to. the fact is there are dollar signs on everything said over the airwaves. the black dollar is very strong even in times of economic distress. MSNBC made a finacial decision. Anyone who can't see that needs to open thier eyes. as for Mr. Imus, I for one, am glad he was fired. It is people like him and people who think that it is ok for him to be able to go on after a "job- saving" type of apology, is why I left the military. There is no reason for a clolege educated person like myself serve a country who have made and are "still" making minorities the but of their jokes and lopsided reality of freedom. The real question is this, have mr. imus stand in fronmt of the father's of the girls and make his apology. I have three girls, 1 daughter and 2 step-daughters. I would not hesitate for an instant think about putting some of that "army" training to use for my own personal interests. Mr. Imus, I hope you realize now, like most minorities already know..."There is no second chance. You make a mistake and you live with it."

Posted by: maxspriggs on April 12, 2007 6:04 PM

Agreed, Maxspriggs. Why is it the conservatives who are so gung-ho on the free market get all up in arms when the market of ideas rejects someone like Imus, whose actions cost his employer money? Free speech is a right, but if you want to say things most people find offensive, you'd better be self-employed.

Posted by: Moon Over My Hammy on April 12, 2007 6:17 PM

When did "Free speech" - as in "I don't like what you're saying but I'll defend to the death your right to say it" - ever mean it's okay to shout "FIRE" in a crowded theater?

Let's get real and follow the circle to its close: you can say whatever you want (or try to), and in America you may (theoretically) have the right to do so, but there's nothing about "Free Speech" that says you have the right to avoid, evade, or otherwise deflect the consequences (positive or negative) of that 'Free Speech.

[I say "theoretically because of this: [ http://winnipeg.indymedia.org/item.php?4986S ]: Walter F. Murphy, the McCormick Professor of Jurisprudence, Emeritus, at Princeton University and a top Constitutional scholar gave a televised speech that slammed President George W. Bush's executive overreach. He was recently told that he had been added to the Transportation Security Administration's terrorist watch list when he attempted to check his luggage at the curbside in Albuquerque before boarding a plane to Newark, New Jersey. Murphy was told he could not use the service. "I was denied a boarding pass because I was on the Terrorist Watch list," he said. When inquiring with a clerk why he was on the list, Murphy was asked if he had participated in any peace marches. "We ban a lot of people from flying because of that," a clerk said.

'Free Speech' and the 'Consequences of Free Speech' are closely related but they are surely different. A man and his pals can call each other 'queer' if that's alright amongst themselves, however, as an outsider, call a man and his pals 'queer' in some parts of this country (which is your right in our 'Free Speech' nation) and we're apt to be burying you come morning.

There's a difference in 'tact' and emotional content in saying, for example, to a woman, "Your face would stop a clock" versus "When I look at your face time stands still" - as Mel Gibson discovered when he claimed that "...Jews controlled everything..." Jewish media and celebrities have said much the the same and more than Gibson did and not a 'shot' has been fired in their direction, partly because, I surmise, they were insiders speaking of insiders, and "feeling their oats" (different emotional content). For example, the article "Do Jews Run Hollywood? - You bet they do--and what of it" by Ben Stein, which until recently was posted on E! Online (and has now been quietly withdrawn) was written he says, in reflection, and after thinking about Marlon Brando's comments on"Larry King Live":

Brando said: "Hollywood is run by jews; it is owned by jews--and they should have a greaqter sensitivity about the issue of people who are suffering. Because...we have seen...the greaseball, we've seen the Chink, we've seen the slit-eyed dangerous Jap, we have seen the wily Filipino, we've seen everything but we never saw the kike. Because they knew perfectly well, that that is where you draw the [line]." One guess as to what Brando was chided for.

As Imus's (and McGuirk, and "Sidiot"'s) network is discovering, courtesy of `MSNBC's withdrawal of advertising, while free speech may be free, some of the CONSEQUENCES of free speech are not. They can be downright expensive. And properly so. Racist comments about races or ethnic groups OTHER THAN YOUR OWN by major, influential, and highly connected media figures are not trivial. The First Amendment guarantees the right to say, amongst other things, hateful things (within limits), but it does not guarantee the use of a giant megaphone to do that with. So all the gripes about free speech miss the point: Say what you will, however unwise in time and place but then, please, please, be a 'man' and take the medicine of your consequences. Free speech doesn't mean free conseqeunces.

Posted by: kilamanjaro on April 12, 2007 6:48 PM

Biggest mistake was apologizing for what he does. He makes comments about EVERY race - religion whatever. To entertain apologies with the likes of Sharpton & Jackson demeans him.

I'm quite surprised at Whoopi's oppinion about Imus. I could swear it was only a few years ago when she lost her job as the slim fast spokesperson for a comment she made about George Bush. It's all the same she said it to be funny and so did he. I don't think it's funny what Imus said but we do have a choice. Turn the channel, switch the station. I've stopped listening to many people because I thought it was idiotic what they were saying.
We're becoming a nation of witch hunters hurry up and hang everyone who doesn't conform to all this PC crap out there. I'm not saying agree with him I'm just saying relax a little bit and pull the sticks out of your butts. Rev. Al you need to crawl back to where you came from. As if you are perfect and have never made a mistake. People have forgiven you for making mistakes. Can we say Tawana Brawley. She claimed that 6 white men raped her and 1 or 2 of the men were cops. It all turned out that she lied. Rev. Al is a cop hater who only wants to start trouble. He will use any excuse to show his fat, ugly head on TV. He has an ugly face and an ugly heart and it shows. He doesn't care what Imus said he's just using it as an excuse to go out there and put a fire under people when we should be putting fire's out.
Al, I can't wait until the day when you need someone and no one will be there. All your supporters will kick your sorry ass to the curb.
I know, call Tawana, maybe she's not busy getting raped by 6 white guys and lying about it.
When the hell will his 15 minutes be up.

Its also amazing that Carlos Mencia is the hottest comic around....and has anybody really listened to him. Blacks, Women,Middle eastern, gays, handicapped everyone is fair game. He constantly uses the words ho and the "N" word and people line up to get tickets for sold out shows. No outcry to get him off comedy central or boycotting his shows.

As for our two Revs AL and Jesse what about their "little" racial gaffs or should we call it hate as it truely is. Do we all recall Twana Brawlee and Rev Al's outcry of racist comments to hang the white cops who committed unspeakable acts on this poor defenseless black girl. I believe Rev AL and that lawyer who I believe created the whole incident to get them media attention and into the public eye. What were the consequences to either of those two "gentlemen" when the TRUTH came out that the entire incident was fiction. Did our Rev Al even say he was sorry, no because he's not. Next to my friend the Rev Jesse, he's been on the wrong side of issues and made many racist remarks over his "career" enough time that he and Rev AL could fill the Grand Canyon with their lies and racist hatered. Jesse will you be gracing HymieTown with a visit anytime soon, or offering "I'm sorry for rushing to judgement to the Duke Lacrosse players and give them back the year of their lives that was taken away from them. These two only have to hear that the parties are black and white before they hop on the racism bandwagon and make everything about race.

Since we are dealing with two "religious "men I will call to them the quote from Jesus, to help them think before they act. "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone" How about "to Err is human but to forgive Divine" Men shouldn't rush to judgement when Jesus says all you have to do is ask for forgiveness and it will be granted. I guess these two know more than the MAN they profess to follow his teachings.

To the tard below this post: if mel gibson had called all jewish women basket ball players nappy headed hoes he probably would have not been treated like a crazy ignorant Australian, just another bigot moron. I love it when terrorists and others find a way to insinuate jews into every situation that relates to racism -- now blaming jews for being so offended after their brilliant hero gibson said that "jews are to blame for the world's wars," as he did.

BTW, I think Imus needs to go.

Thank you MSNBC,CBS,Rev.Al,Jesse, and all the rest who now make us (the USA)look like some nation we usually mock for not allowing free speech.
I wonder how the rest of the world is digesting this?
Some old ,white, wrinkled faced ex-coke head calls some young ladies a naughty name, and he's removed from the air.
Lets complete the sacrifice and remove all offensive words from Websters, take out those dirty pictures from girlie mags, and remind young college ladies that, if someone calls you a name,go on T.V. and look hurt untill the offender is silenced. When the coach of the Rutgers team stated on Oprah that.. "Imus stole our dream", I laughed so hard I pee'd my pants. Honest.Hey,coach, get a grip, don't let your gals listen to any rap songs or you'll really cry a river. I can't wait for Rev.Sharptongue and crew to take on all those black rappers who say worse and with more frequency. Well, I will wait though, because you will never see that happen.Old-white-wrinkled-faced-ex-cokeheads are a much safer target.
