There was a time when co-hosting The View was considered a dream job, but these days ABC is having a tough time filling the position!

Alexandra Wentworth, a.k.a. Mrs. George Stephanopolous, has been a popular guest-host on the show, but she recently refused the network's offer of a fulltime gig since they burned her once before.

RadarOnline.com can exclusively reveal that Wentworth, 50, was previously asked to join the panel before the latest offer, but they yanked the deal out from under her when the network had a change of heart and went with Jenny McCarthy instead.

"Jenny had like a million followers on social media, and producers thought all those people would watch her on The View," explains a source to RadarOnline.com. "They were wrong."

The fallout from the situation with Wentworth didn't help the relationship between ABC and her husband, Stephanopolous, who hosts Good Morning America and is now also the go-to news anchor for ABC Evening News whenever David Muir needs a substitute.

"Now they're calling Ali all the time and want her because the show is dying," laughs the source. "She's definitely not going there now!"

As RadarOnline.com reported, ratings for the talk show have plummeted and as the less-than-stellar 18th season of The View nears its end, producers are looking to shake things up yet again after a rocky year of surprise exits, including Sherri Shepherd, Jenny McCarthy and Rosie O'Donnell.

Wentworth, meantime, has a new show in the works and her book Happily Ali After will be published this spring.
